Retaining is engineering, not stacking

A retaining wall is holding back tonnes of wet soil, and it fails for two reasons: no foundation, or no drainage. Water building up behind an unvented wall generates enormous pressure, which is why you see so many garden walls leaning outwards with cracked joints.

We dig and pour a concrete footing, build with reinforcement where the height needs it, and always put drainage behind the wall — free-draining stone, a membrane and weep holes or a land drain. Steps are set out so every rise in a flight is identical, because the one that isn't is the one people trip on.

  • Concrete footing dug and poured for every retaining wall
  • Free-draining backfill, membrane and weep holes or land drain behind
  • Reinforcement and, where needed, a structural engineer's input
  • Steps set out to a uniform rise, typically 150mm, with a 300mm+ going
  • Coping and treads cut from the same batch as your paving

Choice is usually part cost, part matching what's already in the garden.

Walls & steps questions

Can't see yours? Ring the freephone — you'll get one of us, not a call centre. All FAQs.

Do I need building regs for a retaining wall?

Garden retaining walls generally don't need building regulations approval, but anything over about a metre — or holding up a neighbour's ground, a driveway or a structure — should be designed properly. We'll bring in an engineer where it warrants it.

How long do sleepers last?

Pressure-treated softwood sleepers give fifteen to twenty years with drainage behind them and no soil against the face. Oak goes considerably longer for roughly twice the cost.

Can you terrace a steeply sloping garden?

That's usually the right answer for a steep garden — two or three flat, usable levels connected by steps, instead of one slope nobody uses. We'll set the levels out on site with pegs so you can see it.
