Artificial grass on a proper sub-base, not on soil

Premium pile laid over compacted stone and grano, with joints seamed and edges fixed so it stays flat and drains.

The base is the whole job

Artificial grass laid straight onto soil or an old lawn will hold water, sink where you walk and ripple within a season. We build the same kind of base we'd put under paving — dug out, Type 1 compacted, then a grano or sand-and-cement layer screeded dead flat and rolled.

On top of that goes a weed membrane, then the grass, seamed with joining tape and adhesive so you can't find the joins, and fixed to a treated timber or paving perimeter. It drains straight through, and it's usable the day we finish.

  • Excavated and Type 1 sub-base compacted in layers
  • Grano or sharp sand laying course screeded and rolled flat
  • Weed membrane under the full area
  • Joints seamed with tape and adhesive, not overlapped
  • Perimeter fixed to treated timber or paving edge
  • Brushed up and, on pet installations, sand-infilled

Pile and specification

Bring the kids and the dog to the samples — pile choice is mostly about who uses the lawn.

Artificial grass questions

Can't see yours? Ring the freephone — you'll get one of us, not a call centre. All FAQs.

Does artificial grass drain?

Yes — the backing is perforated and the sub-base underneath is free-draining stone, so water goes straight through. That only holds true if the base was built properly; grass on soil will puddle.

Does it get hot in summer?

It's warmer than real grass in direct sun, like any synthetic surface. A quick spray with a hose cools it straight down, and lighter piles run cooler than dark ones.

How long does it last?

Ten to fifteen years on a good pile and a proper base, and most manufacturers back that with a warranty. The base outlasts the grass, so a replacement pile later is a much smaller job.
